VIEW IN, VIEW OUT

View In, View Out is a collaborative commission with the writer Gwyneth Herbert, sound artist Jason Singh and nature documentary maker Chris Howard, produced by Sound UK. Together they will be working to connect with communities and the Mendip Hills National Landscape, creating a multi- disciplinary commission of lyrics, songs and sound recordings based in the town and the landscape.

The Artists: An acclaimed composer, lyricist and performer with connection at the heart of her practice, Gwyneth Herbert has collaborated with artists and communities around the world to create a huge canon of genre-defying work. Commissions include London Sinfonietta, Snape Maltings, Mahogany Opera.

Jason Singh is highly regarded sound artist, beatboxer, DJ and workshop leader, working across installations in museums and the outdoors, live performances and community residencies. Processing bio-data from plants, trees, wildlife, Jason captures the unheard sounds of nature within his compositions. Commissions include BBC, V&A, Milton Keynes Festival, and WOMAD.

Mendip resident, Chris Howard is an award-winning producer and director of British wildlife documentaries including the BBC’s Springwatch and Wild Isles series. He also collaborates with other artists, musicians and authors to bring British wildlife to life in new ways.

Artist Statement

We’re so excited to be making work with and for local communities in this new collaboration. And the opportunity to combine our passion for nature and community to draw out the voices of the people, nature and landscape of Mendip and Weston, where Chris and Gwyn live.

Jason: The Nature Calling commission is an incredible opportunity for me to be working with local communities, world-class artists and the National Landscape. I am deeply excited about exploring and bringing out the stories, voices and histories of the people and landscapes of Weston-Super-Mare and the Mendip Hills.

Gwyn: This collaboration is such an exciting opportunity for me to make in - and with - my new hometown. Inspired by the community and their stories; Jason, Chris and their visions; the landscape and its rich, layered history… and to create something magical together that honours the voices of us all.

Chris: As a Mendip resident, Chris can’t wait to bring his passion for the wildlife and natural landscapes of the area to a new audience. He loves nothing more than showing people new ways to experience and interact with the natural world - and hopes that the intersection of his work with that of Jason and Gwyn will be transformative for local residents.

Sound UK will be working with Super Culture and the Mendip Hills National Landscape Team.
